DANB CDA: earning the Certified Dental Assistant credential

Facts read in DANB's Candidate Handbook and 9 other documents listed under Sources

The Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential from DANB is earned by passing three exams: General Chairside Assisting (GC), Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) and Infection Control (ICE). All three passes must fall within 5 years. Only GC has entry requirements, and the credential is renewed every year.

One credential, three exams

DANB does not run a single certified dental assistant test. The credential is the sum of three exams, each with its own score and its own pass.

  • GC: 95 questions in 75 minutes, on four-handed chairside work, patient care and dental materials.
  • RHS: 75 questions in 60 minutes, on dental imaging and radiation protection.
  • ICE: 75 questions in 60 minutes, on infection prevention, instrument processing and workplace safety.

You can sit all of them at one appointment, two together, or one at a time. What matters is the clock: the first pass starts it, and the last one has to land within 5 years.

Radiation Health and Safety is also a stand-alone exam, and some states name it for dental x-ray duties (the RHS page). That pass counts toward the CDA as long as it is still inside the window when the other two are done. The infection control part has no prerequisites either and can be booked by itself.

Who may sit General Chairside

Entry rules apply to GC alone; RHS and ICE are open to anyone. For GC you need one of three pathways and a current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS card:

  1. Pathway I, by education: a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program, or an RDH license. Students close to graduation can apply early with an Intent to Graduate form.
  2. Pathway II, by work: a high school diploma (or an equivalent) and dental assisting work (3,500 hours over 2–4 years), verified by a licensed dentist. This is the route for assistants trained on the job.
  3. Pathway III, for people who already have dental training: former CDA holders, dental students and graduates, including dentists trained outside the US or Canada.

The early-application limit and the background questions on every application are listed in the table above.

Same letters, different credential

In search results the letters often mean the Child Development Associate, an early childhood credential with no link to dentistry. A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) title is something else again: a state credential issued by a dental board, not by DANB (how state titles compare).

How to become a certified dental assistant, in order

  1. Look up your state first. Duties are set by each state board, and as of November 2026 DANB lists the DANB CDA exam application on the dental assisting pages of 36 states and the District of Columbia. The state table breaks that down state by state.
  2. Choose your GC pathway and gather its proof; the CPR, BLS or ACLS card must remain valid for the whole testing window.
  3. Decide whether to test in one sitting or in parts (next section).
  4. Submit the application and fee through your DANB account. The authorization email starts a testing window; schedule with Pearson VUE before it closes (booking steps).
  5. Pass the remaining parts before the 5 years run out, then keep up the yearly renewal.

One sitting or several

On the 2026 fee schedule the single appointment is the cheapest way to all three exams: a pair plus a single exam costs more, and three single exams more still (fee table). Splitting still makes sense in three cases:

  • You already passed RHS for a state requirement. Book the ICE and GC pair.
  • Your GC pathway is not complete yet. Take RHS and ICE now and add GC when you qualify.
  • You would rather sit at home. Only the parts booked separately are listed with an online option (test center or online).

The yearly renewal

Renewal calls for 12 CDE a year, with the required topics and the fee in the table above. The infection control and bloodborne pathogens credits are part of the yearly total, not added on top of it. Holding a second DANB certification raises the credit count; the table above has the figure.

A right-handed operator is preparing an MO on #3. The assistant should place the HVE tip:

Pick the option you would mark on test day. The choice stays fixed, and every option then explains itself.

  1. Directly over the occlusal of #3
A tip held over the occlusal surface sits between the bur and the operator's eyes, blocking both the view and the light.
  2. Lingual, slightly distal to #3
For a right-handed operator the assistant sits on the patient's left, so on the maxillary right the palatal side is the near side; the tip goes just distal to the tooth being cut, where it catches the spray.
  3. Lingual, slightly mesial to #3
The palatal side is right, but standard placement is slightly distal to the tooth being prepared; moving the tip mesial shifts it away from where the spray collects.
  4. Buccal, slightly distal to #3
Buccal placement is the rule for the patient's left side; on #3 the buccal surface faces the operator, so the tip would cross the patient and crowd the operator's field.

An office connects an independent water reservoir to the dental unit. On its own, the reservoir:

  1. Keeps water under 500 CFU/mL
500 CFU/mL is the target for treated unit water, but a reservoir alone does not reach it; without a cleaner or chemical treatment counts climb well above that level.
  2. Makes water sterile for surgery
Reservoir water is not sterile; surgical procedures call for sterile solution delivered through a sterile system.
  3. Does not stop waterline biofilm
A separate bottle only changes the water source; the narrow tubing still grows biofilm, so the system still needs a treatment product and regular monitoring.
  4. Does not require water testing
A reservoir gives no information about water quality, so periodic testing is still how the office confirms the water meets the standard.

After lubricating a high-speed handpiece that requires it, the assistant should, before packaging it for sterilization:

  1. Place it in the ultrasonic
Most manufacturers prohibit ultrasonic cleaning of handpieces because it damages bearings and optics; cleaning was already done before lubrication.
  2. Wipe it with disinfectant only
Wiping the outside does nothing about the surplus lubricant inside the head, and disinfection never replaces heat sterilization of a handpiece.
  3. Seal it wet in the pouch
Packaging a handpiece with oil and moisture still on it traps residue in the pouch and can keep steam from reaching every surface.
  4. Run it to expel excess oil
Running the handpiece briefly after lubrication pushes out surplus oil that would otherwise bake onto the turbine and soil the package during sterilization.

An assistant has a herpetic whitlow on her finger. According to CDC, she should:

  1. Be kept from patient contact
CDC's personnel-health guidance restricts a worker with herpetic whitlow from patient contact and from handling the patient's environment until the lesion has healed.
  2. Double-glove and work as usual
Doubling gloves is the protective reflex many staff reach for, but glove tears and leaks make it no substitute for keeping the infected finger away from patients.
  3. Bandage it and keep working
Bandaging treats the whitlow like a minor cut, but the lesion sheds infectious virus, so a dressing does not make patient care safe.
  4. Wear a finger cot under the glove
A finger cot covers the lesion yet leaves the herpes virus one tear away from a patient; a covering does not replace work restriction.

Questions about earning the CDA

Do GC, RHS and ICE have to be passed on the same day?

No. They can be taken together or apart, in any order, as long as all three passes fall within 5 years.

Will an RHS pass from a state x-ray requirement count toward the CDA?

Yes, if it is still inside the window when you pass the last of the three. If it is older, that part has to be taken again.

Can I earn the CDA without dental assisting school?

Yes. Pathway II accepts a high school diploma plus dental assisting work verified by a licensed dentist (3,500 hours over 2–4 years) instead of a CODA program.

Is there a best order for the three parts?

Usually RHS or ICE, because neither has prerequisites. GC can wait until your pathway is complete.
